The Story Behind the Story
While Magic at Midnight takes place in a fictional city, there are some details from the story that are based in fact.
1. The laws prohibiting magic in Linness are based on the old Prohibition laws from the 1920s. The reasons listed in the story for outlawing magic are the same ones used to make alcohol illegal.
2. While I was writing this book, I was working at a flooring store and the names for the 5 districts in Linness came from the names of carpet samples. It just goes to show that you never know where you'll find your inspiration!
3. I met another author Sabine S. while at a writing retreat in Scotland in 2023. She is a native German and graciously helped me fine-tune the German words used in this book.
4. I entered the first chapter of Magic at Midnight in a contest at the Storymakers Writing Conference. To my utter shock and delight, it won first place! The first chapter has remained largely unchanged from its first draft in 2021.
5. There IS a plan to write another book based in this world. It will feature another couple (characters we meet in book 1) and a new mystery, but Gemma and Hendrik will show up in book 2 as well!
